Electricians finish 8-2-2 to win inagural NLHL season
The Marquette Electricians started the season on a tear, going undefeated in their first seven games. After a set back to the second-place Soo Indians on December seventh the Electricians went right back to it, winning three of their last four to finish the season 8-2-2 and clinch the first ever Northern Lakes Hockey League championship.
Last weekend the Green Bay Gamblers and Soo Indians played the first NLHL games in nearly a month when the teams met up in the Soo. For Green Bay it was a much needed successful weekend as they earned their second win over the season 4-3 Saturday night, before settling for a tie on Sunday afternoon. The points moved the Gamblers into third in the league, passing the Ojibwa Eagles.
It was an exciting weekend for both the Ojibwa Eagles and Soo Indians as they battled with eight other teams in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario during the Steel City Tournament. The two NLHL squads combined for seven wins in the tournament, and both saw action passed the round-robin portion of the tournament. While the Indians and Eagles were fighting it out in Canada, the Jr. Gamblers were playing host to one of the hottest teams in the nation. Press Read More for the full scoop.
Last weekend the Northern Lakes Hockey League jetted back into action with a series between the first-place Marquette Electricians and Green Bay Jr. Gamblers. We won’t see another NLHL series until the end of January, but that doesn’t mean the teams are off. This weekend the Ojibwa Eagles and Soo Indins will be playing in the Steel City Tournament. The Gamblers aren’t out of action as they play host to Lake Forest Academy Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, while the Electricians get back to their roots with their alumni weekend.
Eagles play 3 games in 2 days and walk away empty handed
The NLHL hosted three league games the last weekend before the Christmas break when the Ojibwa Eagles traveled to Marquette to play a Saturday morning game, loaded up the bus and headed to the Soo to play the Indians in a two-game series. Here's the rundown from the weekend's games.
After a four-game treat last weekend, this weekend the Northern Lakes Hockey League will feature only one two-game series. The Soo Indians (2-23-1 overall, 1-3-0 NLHL) will be heading south to play against the Green Bay Jr. Gamblers (8-16-3 overall, 0-2-2 NLHL) in a two-game grudge match with the second-seed up for grabs.
The action was back-and-fourth, the goals kept coming and the hard hits were aplenty. However, at the end of the game the two teams were still winless in the Northern Lakes Hockey League.
Marquette stays undefeated, but Gamblers earn a point
The Marquette Electricians looked like a sure thing heading down to Green Bay, Wisc. this weekend to play in a two-game series with the Gamblers, but the Gamblers gave them nothing easy. Saturday night the Electricians jumped to the first lead of the game, and never gave the Gamblers the lead in the game, but the never-quit Gamblers fought hard bringing it back again and again before the final buzzer sounded and the Gamblers moved to 0-1-0 in NLHL action with a final score of 4-3. The Green Bay Jr. Gamblers fought harder Sunday, trying to avoid losing their fourth straight home game the Gamblers got the goals they needed to keep it tight with the Electricians and at the end of the game the teams found themselves tied at three a piece. With the tie The Green Bay Jr. Gamblers move to 0-1-1 in NLHL play while the Electricians move to 3-0-1.
One week removed from a sweep over the Soo Indians the Marquette Electricians (12-8-4 overall, 2-0-0 NLHL) will make a weekend trip to Green Bay to play against the Green Bay Jr. Gamblers (6-15-2 overall, 0-0-0 NLHL) in NLHL action.
The Electricians dominated at home last weekend scoring 14 total goals in two games. John Aho’s nine points, including four goals, led the team. Both Andrew Mills and Jonathan Hill played well in net for the Electricians, stopping all but three goals during the two games.
The Electricians had nine different goal scorers last weekend and 14 different players earn points in the two games. They'll be looking to build off of that offensive effort, and continue the excellent defensive play that has paced the NLHL thus far.
However, tough action after the whistle have led to suspensions for forwards Brandon Smaby and Joey Enright, who will both sit after scuffles during the second game against the Indians.
The Gamblers will be making their NLHL debut this weekend after losing their two league exhibition games to the Thunder Bay Kings last weekend. The Gamblers played hard but couldn’t find enough offense against the Kings. In the two games against the Kings they lost by a total score of 1-8.
The Gamblers will be looking to build off of the home crowd, something they’ve struggled to do so far this year, holding a 0-2-1 at Cornerstone. “We need to make (playing at home) our advantage. We haven’t been able to do that this season so far, but we will look to change that this weekend.” Said Gamblers Coach Michael Buchan.
“We have to play a smart game and play to our strengths. If we do this it will be anyone's game," said Buchan when speaking about what his team needs to do this weekend.
The first game will be played at 4 p.m. Saturday, before an 11 a.m. start on Sunday morning. Both games will be played at the Cornerstone Community Ice Center in DePere, Wisc.
Notes: The Gamblers will be playing in their first ever NLHL game Saturday. Marquette’s John Aho leads with league with nine points (4+5=9), Aho is tied with Wolff Belanger for the league lead with four goals, Mitch Snider leads the league with 6 assists, Andrew Mills and Jonathon Hill are tied for the league lead with one win, while Mills leads the league with a 1.00 goals against average and 93.8 save percentage. The Electricians are riding a two game winning streak. The Gamblers will be playing without forward Ben Verbeten, who is out with a sore knee.
