U.P. teams match up in rivalry series
For the Indians (1-5-4 NLHL, 6-18-6 overall) it will be the final weekend of their three-weekend NLHL home stand that started with a 1-0-1 weekend against the Ojibwa Eagles, followed by a 0-1-1 weekend against the Thunder Bay Kings.
“The team has understood from the beginning that it would take hard work to have success at this level, and for the first part of the season we played a tough schedule that the kids knew would only make us better in the future,” Soo coach Jerry Harwood said. “Now they have seen that their hard work is paying off by winning a few games and competing in every one of them.”
The Indians are now 3-1-2 in their last six games overall, and have moved up to be ranked No. 72 in the nation.
“I believe that the team has come together in the last couple of weeks and (the players) are focusing on hockey without any distractions,” Harwood said. “Several players have stepped up to be leaders both on and off the ice, such as Corey Jewell, Jeremy Gravedoni, Gavin Burbach, Jeremy Kaunisto and Alex Goodhue have all worked hard to keep everything in perspective and move the team forward.”
The Electricians (1-7-0, 2-21-4) are coming in as underdogs for the first time against the Indians in quite some time. The Electricians went 5-1-0 against the Indians last year, outscoring the Indians by a combined total of 26-7. They have not met this year.
Last weekend the Electricians went 0-5-0 in the NAPHL Showcase in Rochester, N.Y. including two shutout losses, but the ‘Tros won their last NLHL game, a 3-0 victory over the Thunder Bay Kings on Nov. 22.
The series will begin Saturday afternoon at 3 and conclude Sunday at 10 a.m.
No other NLHL games are going on this weekend, but the Ojibwa Eagles (2-5-2, 5-14-3), Capital Centre Pride (7-0-1, 14-6-3) and Shattuck St. Mary’s Sabres (5-1-5, 11-4-5) are all playing in the USHL Showcase in Green Bay.
The Kings (6-4-2, 22-10-2) have the weekend off after taking three points from a trip to the Soo last weekend. Kings forward Todd Skirving had three assists in the two-game series to give him a league-leading 15 points on the season.
