Indians sweep, move to 3-1-2 in last six NLHL games
“We played as hard as we’ve played all year,” Soo coach Jerry Harwood said. “We always have to play hard when we face Marquette.”
The Indians were without Harwood Saturday, but that didn’t stop the team from jumping out to a 2-0 lead with Gunner Bjorklund scoring in the first period and Corey Jewell in the second.
The Electricians (1-9-0, 2-23-4) put the puck on net 28 times but only Tyler Szabo was able to find the back of the net, scoring with just 1:25 remaining in the third period.
Soo goaltender Joey Gravedoni earned the win.
“We’re playing like a machine out there now and we’re getting good defense with good goaltending,” Harwood said. “Our role players are stepping up when they need to and it’s just fun to watch them play now.”
On Sunday the Indians scored one in the first (Dave Castellion), before exploding for four goals in the second period.
Alex Goodhue scored early on with an assist from the NLHL’s leading point getter, Colby Spoonemore, and Matt Samuel, igniting a flurry of four goals in six minutes including markers by Cody Blomm, Bjorklund and Jewell.
Dustin Goupille scored to put the Electricians on the board late in the third period and the Soo’s Chris Hoffman ended the scoring near the end of the third period, giving the Soo a five-goal lead again.
Gravedoni stopped 18 shots and moved to 3-2-2 in NLHL play while Brandon Hakala stopped 28 shots in the loss.
“This team showed real good character while facing probably their top rival in the Electricians,” Soo assistant coach Rick Corbiere said. “I’m glad to see us go into the break with a pair of wins, morale is real high on this team right now and they’re playing as a team.”
