Electros and Eagles highlight busy NLHL weekend
“Many of these kids have played against each other since they have been squirts,” Eagles’ coach Dan Giachino said of the Electricians and Eagles rivalry. “It has always been a rivalry, and always will be.”
The two teams have met twice the season with the Eagles (2-5-2 NLHL, 5-16-3 overall) winning 8-3 in Marquette during the Fall Classic and, 3-2, in Calumet, Mich., during the Superior Cup.
The Electricians (1-9-0, 2-23-4) are coming into this weekend after being swept (2-1, 6-1) by the Soo Indians. The Electros lost 11 of their first 12 games, but have since turned a corner, highlighted by a 3-0 victory over the Thunder Bay Kings in NLHL play on Nov. 22.
The Eagles were swept in their last NLHL series, losing 5-3 and 6-3 to the NLHL leading Capital Centre Pride.
Eagles coach Dan Giachino said this weekend’s games are vital.
“It’s a huge weekend, we have been struggling a little lately,” Giachino said. “A couple wins would provide some much-needed confidence going into the second half of the season.”
The Eagles will host Marquette Saturday at 3 p.m. at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton and the two teams will meet again Sunday at the Berry Events Center in Marquette at 1 p.m.
In other NLHL action, Shattuck (5-1-5, 11-5-5) and the Pride (7-0-1, 20-6-3) will play both games Saturday, starting with an 11 a.m. game and finishing at 7 p.m. , both games will be played at The Summit at the Capital Centre in Lansing.
Currently the two teams are tied for first in the standings, with the Pride owning a three-game at hand advantage.
