Visitors dominate NLHL action; SSM sweeps, Soo takes 3 pts
Saturday the Indians scored four-first period goals and added another 14 seconds into the second period before the Eagles engineering a three-goal comeback that was completed with Josh Borgen netting his third goal of the season at 10:24 into the third.
Despite chances, the Eagles never acquired a lead in the game.
Colby Spoonemore rocketed his way to the tops of the NLHL scoring chart with two goals and two assists Saturday for his second four-point effort of the season. Robbie Payne added four assists for the Eagles. All four goaltenders saw action with Norman Purmal stopping all 18 shots he faced for the Eagles and Joey Gravedoni stopping 16 of the 17 shots he faced.
“We showed resiliency (Saturday) night by making the comeback, but just couldn’t finish it,” Eagles coach Dan Giachino said.
Sunday the Eagles scored first with midseason-acquisition Chris Westin getting his fifth goal in just four NLHL games, but from there the Indians took control.
David Castellion added two goals for his fourth multi-point game of the season and third in his last five games.
Spoonemore added a short-handed goal late in the second period moving his point streak to five games, and the Indians outshot the Eagles 13-4 that period, but from there it was all Ojibwa.
The Eagles got a goal from Payne midway through the final period, but couldn’t find another despite putting 15 shots on Joey Gravedoni, who earned his fourth win of the year with 22 saves.
“We had opportunities early in the game and we didn’t capitalize, and that’s why it got the way it was at the end,” Soo coach Jerry Harwood said. “But overall we’re happy to leave here with three out of four points, that’s what we came for.”
North of the border the Shattuck St. Mary’s Sabres escaped a trip to Thunder Bay with a sweep, outdueling the Kings 6-5 Saturday morning and 5-4 Saturday night to all but clinch a top two finish in the NLHL standings, and put them right on pace with the Capital Centre Pride for the regular-season title.
The morning affair was a back-and-fourth game with Shattuck answering Thunder Bay’s first through fourth goals within minutes before Trevor Stewart finally gave the visitor’s their first lead of the game 39 seconds into the third period.
After the NLHL’s leading point-getter Todd Skirving tied the game 7:31 into the third Clay Curwin came back and scored the game winner 18 seconds later.
Shattuck scored two goals in the first and second period Saturday night to hold a 4-2 lead after two periods.
Tyler Anton cut the lead to one on a power play before Cody Marooney regained the two-goal cushion.
With just over two minutes left Adam Fares again brought the Kings within one, but the tying goal eluded the home squad.
Skirving finished the weekend with six points and continued his point streak to six games. Matt Kaarela and Dylan Butler both had five-point weekends for Thunder Bay.
For SSM Nicholas Weberg and Hans Drawberg had five points each while Jesper Aasa added four in the two-game series.
