Shattuck takes NLHL regular season title with 33 points
The Sabres opened the weekend by jumping out to a 2-0 lead on the Ojibwa Eagles, first with a Peter Clements goal, then a Nicholas Weberg marker. Both goals came on the power play.
After Robbie Payne brought the Eagles within one, Shattuck blew the game wide open as Clay Curwin, Mikhail Bushinski and Weberg all scored within five minutes.
Gavin Porter cut the lead back to three, but Hans Drawbert scored as the period ended to keep Shattuck up by four. Jesper Aasa and Cody Marooney scored third-period goals before Payne added his second of the game to cut the lead to 8-3.
Caleb Neal made 18 saves on 21 shots for the victory while Norman Purmal stopped 47 shots for the injury-ridden Eagles.
Shattuck picked up where they left off in the second game as Castrenze Fricano, Paul Parisot, Brian Harrison and Clements all scored first-period goals to put SSM up big early.
The Eagles scored the next two goals; first a marker by Mike Gullan, then Robbie Payne scored his third goal and fourth point of the weekend early in the third.
Shattuck added three more after Payne’s goal, first one by Marooney, then Weberg added his third goal and fifth point of the weekend and finally Parisot put home a shorthanded marker to close out the regular season scoring.
Marcus Zelzer stopped 37 shots to up his league-leading save percentage to .922, while Josh Hendrickson stopped 40 for the Eagles.
The two-game series was the final of the season, meaning all the final seeds are ready for this weekend’s inaugural league tournament to be held at Shattuck.
