Skirving wins NLHL MVP with league lead in points
“Todd brings leadership and tremendous hockey skill and knowledge to our team, which makes the players around him better,” Thunder Bay coach Steve Bailot said in November when Skirving was awarded NLHL Player of the Month. “He loves the game of hockey so much that he competes at such a high level on and off the ice, which is very contagious to the rest of the team.”
Perhaps Skirving’s biggest game of the season was on December 29 with the Capital Centre Pride in town. Skirving earned assists in each of the first two periods, then another early in the third, but the Kings were still down 5-3.
On the power play Skirving earned his fourth assist on a goal to bring it within one, then scored 30 seconds later to tie the game at 5. Finally, with 19 seconds left in the game Skirving found the back of the net again, giving the Kings the win and setting a single-game NLHL record with six points in a game.
Skirving was also named to the NLHL First Team where he joined fellow top scorers Nicholas Weberg from Shattuck St. Mary’s and the Pride’s Brandon Flood.
Weberg finished the season with 26 points, but missed five games. His 1.73 points per game led the league, and he finished the season without a penalty minute.
Flood on the other hand finished fourth in the league with 64 penalty minutes, while also finishing second in the league with 16 goals and 30 points.
Flood’s teammate Brandon Carney was named to the first team as a defenseman. Carney earned Player of the Month honors in September, and his 24 points were the most among NLHL defensemen. Carney had a nine-game point streak to start the season.
Jeremy Gravedoni was also named to the NLHL first team. The 6-foot 1991-birth year defenseman finished his second NLHL season with a goal and five assists while manning the blue line for the Soo Indians. Gravedoni was a valuable piece of the Indians, who finished the season 2-2-2, bringing them to within a point of the third seed.
Marcus Zelzer, who led the league in wins (8), save percentage (.922) and goals against average (2.38), was named the top goaltender, earning the final spot on the NLHL first team.
